How We Test

This page explains how we decide what to recommend, and what we have and haven’t tried ourselves.

What we use ourselves

When a guide says we use something, it means the product is in our house and our red golden uses it. Right now that’s our everyday collar, leash, harness and brush. Everything else is a research pick, and we say so.

What we research

Most picks are based on research, not our own use. For those we explain the reason: who recommends it (for example the AKC, the Golden Retriever Club of America or the Center for Pet Safety) and how it fits a dog that grows to 55 to 75 pounds. Nobody sends us products, and brands can’t pay for a spot.

Facts and sources

Every guide lists its sources at the bottom. We prefer breed clubs, veterinary organizations and veterinary schools. When sources disagree, we show both.

Health information

We’re dog owners, not veterinarians. Health and food information comes from veterinary organizations and veterinary schools, linked at each claim, and it isn’t a substitute for your own vet. When a veterinarian reviews a guide, we’ll name them on the page.

Prices and ratings

We don’t list prices or star ratings because they change. Each product links to current prices at the retailer.

Updates

We review guides at least once a year and change the “Updated” date only when we actually update the content.
